OpenAI’s models are going into Google Cloud. Microsoft is still named as the primary cloud

From 21 October, selected companies can try GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna in Google’s model garden, and can put existing Google Cloud spending toward the bill. General availability is “the coming weeks.” OpenAI says Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.

OpenAI and Google Cloud said on 21 October that OpenAI’s frontier models, and its Codex coding agent, are coming to Google Cloud’s model garden. Google’s account is more precise about who can use them today. GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are in a private preview for selected enterprise customers. Astra is described as the model for harder coding, computer use and research. Sol is the cheaper one near that level. Luna is the fast one for ordinary work at volume. A customer can call them through Google’s APIs, and can point a local Codex installation at Google’s platform for the inference. OpenAI says a general release is planned in the coming weeks, and that companies with an existing Google Cloud spending commitment will be able to draw that commitment down to pay.

Google says this makes it the only large cloud offering all three of the leading closed models, beside more than 200 others, on one platform. That is Google’s comparison, and it is a catalogue claim, not a measure of how much of anyone’s work has moved. OpenAI adds one sentence that keeps the older arrangement in place: Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner. The models are also due, later, inside Google’s Antigravity and Gemini Agent products. “Soon” is the word OpenAI uses for that. It is not a date.

A second till is not a second data centre

What a buyer gained on Tuesday is a way to purchase and call the models inside a Google contract they already have, and to swap among Astra, Sol and Luna without a separate OpenAI agreement for that path. What they did not gain is a statement of capacity, a price per million tokens, or a promise that a Google region will have the same chips Microsoft has. The private preview is a list of selected companies. Everyone else is still waiting on “the coming weeks.”

The arrangement is worth filing because the three model shops and the three clouds are no longer the same three pairs. OpenAI’s weights can now be requested from the company that also sells Gemini. The primary cloud, by OpenAI’s own line, has not changed. A reader who treats this as a move of the training estate is reading a sentence the two companies did not write.
